Yiorgos Kaloudis is a modern cello player who uses his personal technique and differ-ent timbres of the instrument to produce a post modern, jazz/new-age/world, alternate environment.
He was born in 1973 in Athens, Greece, and was raised in a music family. Since his early years, he exhibited a natural talent in improvisation and was self-taught in several instruments including percussion, the drums and the guitar. His love for the cello inspired him to attend the Athenaeum Conservatoire, Athens, where he received a Diploma under the instruction of cellist Claire Demeulenaere. He furthered his studies in impro-visation with musician and composer Stavros Lantsias.
The scholarship from the Fulbright Foundation granted him the chance to develop his personal technique on the instrument and to study composition, arrangement and improvisation under the guidance of Ted Greene and James Mahlis in Los Angeles. His friendship with saxophonist Steve Tavaglione, during his stay in Los Angeles, inspired him to develop his compositional technique, interpretation style and “Cello-live-loop recording” environment of his cello-solo concerts.
Among other endeavours, he participated in performances at the Broadway Fringe Festival in New York, at the Biennale in Rome, in concerts at the “Quasimodo” Jazz club in Berlin, at the Chicago world festival, at the Bloomington world festival in Indianapolis, US, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London as well as the “Common-wealth Games” in Melbourne. He also participated in numerous festivals and produc-tions around the world, in Greece, the United Kingdom, Germany, Cyprus, Austria, Italy, Romania, Turkey, Japan, Australia and the United States of America.
He performs as a cellist but also as a multi instrumentalist (guitar, cajon, udu, tabla, drums, mandolin, ancient Greek harp, calimba, electric bass-’cello tuning’, vocals), he composes music for films, theatrical and dance theatre productions and he also gives master classes, seminars and lectures on his unique personal technique on the cello, and creative ways of performing in modern styles of music.
On February of 2005 DNA LAB_L records released his debut solo CD album “Truth”.
